Panggilan Penyerahan Karya Isu #2
Gerakan sosial berselang krisis

Social movements amidst crisis
We recognise that this call to reflect on the character of contemporary social movements may appear initially to come at an awkward time. We are living through an electorally competitive system that is animated primarily through opaque workings. The progressive left is largely adrift and untethered from the democratisation project that has stitched together a large coalition in the two decades after Reformasi. This moment comes after a critical demobilisation of civil society after the victory of Pakatan Harapan 1.0 in 2018 where many activists were absorbed into the state, leaving the left with fewer avenues for mobilisation. Amidst this retreat, the hypertrophic rehabilitation of ethno-nationalistic impulses is pursued through intrigues rather than mass mobilisation.
Yet, we feel that it is important to examine this issue. If history offers any guidance, it points out that sometimes it is precisely during this kind of lull that movements of significance emerge, seemingly out of nowhere. Debates and confrontations play out and ideas filter into the construction of networks and organisations. This inquiry matters more, now than ever, considering that we live with crises constantly on the horizon. How do pre-existing social forces and ideas reconfigure themselves to meet these pressures? What are the social demands that percolate through various channels? Will any reach such saliency so as to bring political debates beyond elite and technocratic control? But without privileging the present, we note that these questions recur throughout history. To understand contemporary currents, we also invite essays that interrogate how past crises have shaped social mobilisations.
Enquiries and submissions can be sent to jentayu.editor@gmail.com. A short style guide can be found at our “Hubungi Kami” page. Deadline for topic proposals close 30 November 2026 and full essays expect by 31 December 2026.
